We invite you to a festival of applied philosophy in Þingeyri, Iceland, on August 9th and 10th 2024. Our aim is to create a meeting place to reflect on interconnections between people that make up a group or community.

Socrates’ famous motto was “Know yourself”. On one interpretation, it means that each person should find a solitary spot on a deserted island or mountain top to gaze inwardly and reflect on personal values and preferences. We choose instead to interpret it as a call for reflection on the interconnectedness between people.

The festival provides opportunities to participate in know-yourself-sessions that highlight the connections between people. How are my ambitions and goals in life connected to those of the people in my family, community, nation and wider world? How are my practices, efforts, and ways of living dependent upon those of others?

With this philosophical lens in place, we invite you to participate in reflection on the nature of human communality, including more specific issues like friendliness, collaboration, dissent, inclusion, and helpfulness.

Skelin translates to English “the shell”. From Old Norse skel f (“shell”), from Proto-Germanic *skaljō, cognate with Norwegian skjell, English shell, Dutch schil, Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌻𐌾𐌰 (skalja, “tile”).
